The Muñequita Brooch draws inspiration from two powerful symbols of Caribbean cultural memory: the Dominican faceless doll and the Zemi of Pigorini. Renowned for its intricate construction, the Zemi of Pigorini is one of the most remarkable surviving Taíno objects, distinguished by its assembly of diverse materials—including cotton, shell, wood, fiber, and imported beads. Created during the colonial period, it is often understood as evidence of the cultural exchange, continuity, and syncretism that emerged between Taíno and African traditions in the Caribbean. The faceless doll similarly embodies a collective identity shaped by many histories and ancestries. Rather than representing a single individual, its absence of facial features symbolizes the layered cultural heritage that defines the Dominican Republic. Drawing from the zemi's inventive use of materials, the brooch is primarily constructed through beadwork, using beads not only as a decorative element but as a means of storytelling and cultural connection.
